At the CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday, Chelsea Clinton took the stage to pay tribute to Oscar de la Renta‘s legacy and to his legacy and his “generous spirit,” “generous mind” and “limitless heart.”
Their last conversation was all about Clinton’s daughter, Charlotte, who was not yet two months old at the time of de la Renta’s death in October at the age of 82.
Clinton called the designer to thank him for a pink dress that he had knitted for her daughter with husband Marc Mezvinsky. When Clinton asked after de la Renta’s health — he died of complications from cancer — the designer only wanted to talk about Clinton’s new arrival.
“All Oscar wanted to do was talk about Charlotte — to see how she was doing, who did she look like, was she healthy, how was I feeling so soon after having given birth,” said Clinton, according to The Cut.

“The dress that Oscar made for Charlotte was among the last – if not the very last thing – he ever made,” she continued. “I will make sure that she knows that she is one very lucky little girl to have been given such a gift.”
Added Clinton: “I will also make sure that she knows that she's even luckier to live in a world that could create someone who was such a creator as Oscar de la Renta. And that we are better for the life that he lived and all the love that he gave away. I miss him every single day.”
