Holy Freakin’ Controversy, Batman! ‘Hatred’ Hits PC

Hatred

Ah, Hatred. You crazy, crazy bastard.

As we know, video games and the media are not BFFs. They will not play with each other at recess, and they will not ogle stealthily-stashed Playboys in each others' treehouses after school. The way the media usually tells it, games are turning us and our children into fat, anti-social psycho killers.

Violence in video games has long been a hot button issue. Now, the can is open yet again, and there are effing worms everywhere. All thanks to Hatred. Hatred doesn't care. It doesn't mince words. All we're mincing here is innocent bystanders.

From the moment the announcement trailer was revealed, the game's whole tone creeped people out. An unnamed basement-lurking assassin grabs deathly weapon after deathly weapon, all while growling mantastically:
“My name is not important. What is important is what I’m going to do… I just fuckin’ hate this world. And the human worms feasting on its carcass. My whole life is just cold, bitter hatred. And I always wanted to die violently. This is the time of vengeance and no life is worth saving. And I will put in the grave as many as I can. It’s time for me to kill. And it’s time for me to die. My genocide crusade begins here…”

Hatred 2

Dora the Explorer this is not. Your sole goal in the game is to wipe out waves of civilians, in as gore-leaky a fashion as you can. Now, sure, we've all barreled through a pedestrian or two in Grand Theft Auto, but this is a whole different deal. Mass murder of unarmed innocents begging for their lives as a main objective? This is a grisly business, right here.

Remember the last half hour of Commando? It's an almost constant stream of explosions, blood, bullets and general death from Arnold Schwarzenegger. Imagine that, just with all of Arnold's victims as harmless women and children. That's the way Hatred is perceived by some. There may be some social commentary business going on 'neath the surface, but overall it's not great for PR.

Still, there's no such thing as bad publicity. This one hit PC on Monday, and will probably do just fine. Check out some gameplay:
