Not only is she a supermodel and a supermom, but Niki Taylor is also super charitable.
The mom of four and longtime supporter of the American Red Cross is currently participating in Nexcare’s seventh annual Give campaign to raise awareness about the heightened need for blood donation during the summer and encourage people to become blood donors.
Taylor, 40, became a very vocal advocate of the Red Cross following a near-fatal car accident in 2001.
“I needed lots of blood, and I’ve always thought about the donors who gave me a second chance at life,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s important to raise awareness because every two seconds somebody needs a blood transfusion.
“We’re trying to create a culture of giving,” Taylor continues. “One donation can save up to three lives, and you never know when you’re going to be the one who needs the help.”
The supermodel, who landed her first Vogue cover at 15, shared her story of tragedy — her younger sister Krissy, also a model, died from a rare heart condition in 1995 at age 17 — and miraculous survival in an interview with Oprah last fall.
“A lot has happened in my 40 years, and it was a nice reflection on what I’ve done and been through, and how I came out,” she says. “I wanted to share my story with people because my life is really, really good, but I owe it all to those blood donors.”
That “really, really good” life is based in Nashville, where she lives with husband Burney Lamar and her two younger children, daughter Ciel, 6, and son Rex, 3½.
“Ciel just lost her first tooth and is six going on 25,” Taylor jokes. “She’s an old soul and so smart — I don’t remember being so smart! She’s a little woman.”
Rex, too, is “growing up too fast. Life is just always going too fast!” she says.
Taylor is also mother to 20-year-old twin boys Jake, who “is in Idaho, working as a volunteer firefighter, battling forest fires,” and Hunter, who is currently living in Florida but is thinking about moving to Nashville to work as a recording engineer.
To learn more about donating blood, visit the American Red Cross website. World Blood Donor Day is June 14 and, in honor of the “Give” campaign, donors will receive limited edition Nexcare bandages that the model says you can show off like a “badge of honor” and share using “#GiveInspires.”
