The bad news? It’s the middle of the Cold War and the Soviets hate our freedom and want to drop all the a-bombs on us. The good news? We’ve got a secret weapon: an insurance lawyer with integrity played by Tom Hanks.
That’s the basic premise of Steven Spielberg‘s Bridge of Spies as outlined in the film’s first trailer. I’m sure there’s a lot more to it. Probably some parallels to contemporary social issues. Maybe a moving speech about something important. But that’s the gist. The American’s catch a Soviet spy. The Soviets catch an American spy. So the United States government sends Joe Everyman to East Berlin to negotiate a deal, and he saves the day while showing the world what America stands for.
No, really. The words “one man showed the world what we stand for” literally appear on the screen in the trailer
Nobody ever said subtlety is Spielberg’s strong suit.
Bridge of Spies hits theaters October 16.
